Samantha Bond, 24, sparked chaos in a shared flat in Stoke-on-Trent by setting fire to her bed and sheets using a cigarette lighter. The reckless arson attack occurred on 11 August 2021 at a residence on Snow Hill, Shelton, causing a blaze estimated to have caused £1,000 worth of damage.
Bond used a cigarette lighter to ignite her bedding, which quickly led to the carpet melting and the bed frame being destroyed. Alarmingly, she extinguished the flames herself by smothering the fire with her bare hands.
A routine inspection by a worker alerted authorities to the damage, prompting a call to the police. Bond was arrested at the scene. PC Mark Aldridge of Staffordshire Police warned that fellow residents could have suffered serious or even fatal injuries due to Bond’s actions. He added, “Thankfully, the fire stayed small and went out on its own,” and praised the sentencing as a warning to others who might use fire to cause harm. “Arson is a grave threat to communities and won’t be tolerated,” he said.
Leigh Richards, Fire Investigation Lead at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, commented on the case, stating, “We’re glad to see justice done. Our fire investigators worked closely with Staffordshire Police to prove the fire was deliberately started and helped bring Bond to account.”
Bond was sentenced on 8 February at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court to 27 months imprisonment for arson.
