A brutal hammer attack took place on Melksham High Street late on Friday night, October 17. The victim, a man confronted by two masked cyclists dressed entirely in black, was struck with a hammer during the incident.
The attack happened just before midnight when the two suspects, riding bikes, approached the man. One of the assailants then slammed a hammer down on the victim, causing injuries that required emergency medical attention.
Emergency crews quickly transported the injured man to hospital. Fortunately, his injuries were not life-threatening, and he has since been discharged and is now recovering safely at home.
Wiltshire Police responded promptly to the incident, arriving shortly after the attack. Detective Chief Inspector Penny Andrews spoke to concerned residents, stating, “This incident and the large police presence in the town will have undoubtedly caused concern for many residents. I would like to assure you this was an isolated event with no risk to the wider public.”
She continued, “We thank the witnesses who have come forward and urge anyone with information, especially dashcam footage of two males in dark clothing cycling around Melksham town centre in the early hours, to get in touch.”
Authorities are appealing to the public for help in identifying the suspects. Residents are advised to watch out for anyone matching the description of the masked cyclists and to check any dashcam footage if they were in Melksham near midnight on Friday.
