A man from Brierley Hill has been jailed following a major disruption on one of the Midlands’ busiest roads. Geoffrey Brewer, aged 53, climbed onto a bridge over the M42 near Solihull on 10 July, directing racist and religious abuse at emergency workers. His actions forced police to close the motorway in both directions for over five hours.
Brewer’s behaviour caused significant traffic disruption, with long tailbacks forming as National Highways confirmed the full closure of the M42 shortly after 6.30am. The standstill lasted more than five hours while officers and specialist teams negotiated with Brewer on the bridge between junctions 4 and 5.
While perched on the wrong side of the barrier, Brewer targeted police officers and paramedics with a torrent of racial and religious abuse. During the standoff, he bizarrely demanded a full English breakfast but refused to come down from the bridge.
West Midlands Police arrested Brewer at the scene. He faced multiple charges including endangering road users, criminal damage, common assault, and several counts of racially and religiously aggravated harassment, along with public order offences.
At court, it was noted that Brewer’s actions caused major disruption, endangered public safety, and subjected emergency services to sustained abuse. He was sentenced to nine months in prison but was released immediately due to time already served on remand.
