Wiltshire Police are investigating a disturbing incident after several dead ducks were found shot and dismembered near Castlefields Park in Calne. The shocking discovery was made on January 3, 2025, at around 8 a.m. near the skatepark by Station Road.
A member of the public came across the ducks, which had their breasts removed. X-rays conducted by the Wiltshire Rural Crime Team revealed the birds had been shot with an unknown weapon. It remains unclear whether the ducks were killed elsewhere and dumped or died at the location.
PCSO Mark Cook from the Calne Neighbourhood Policing Team commented on the incident, stating: “We are greatly concerned about this incident. The circumstances suggest deliberate harm to the ducks, which is troubling to the community and to us as investigators.”
He added, “We’re working closely with the Wiltshire Rural Crime Team. Extra patrols are out in Castlefields Park and Station Road. We urge locals to report any suspicious behaviour around the waterways.”
Police have issued a public appeal for information. Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the Station Road or Castlefields Park areas is urged to contact Wiltshire Police on 101, quoting reference 54250000987. The grisly discovery has caused shock and concern among local residents and animal welfare groups. Authorities have pledged to continue their efforts to identify and bring the responsible party to justice.
