Wiltshire Police have launched an investigation after a massive fire tore through Old Sarum airfield on the evening of 17 April. Two historic wartime hangars were gutted by the blaze, and several other buildings, including the popular Hangar 3 café, were severely damaged or destroyed.
The alarm was raised shortly after 6pm when flames engulfed two partially derelict hangars at the airfield. A nearby building operated by another business also suffered significant fire damage, increasing the scale of the incident.
Wiltshire Police and fire services are currently probing the cause of the fire, which remains unexplained. In a statement, police said: “We are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area shortly before the fire started to get in touch. Any information, no matter how small, could be vital to our enquiries.”
Officers are urging witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact them by calling 101 and quoting log number 262 of 17/04. Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Old Sarum airfield holds a significant place in local history, dating back to World War I, and is home to numerous aviation businesses. The destruction of its iconic hangars represents a major loss to the community and heritage of the area.
