The Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command has arrested five Iranian nationals across the UK on suspicion of planning a terrorist act. The coordinated raids took place on Saturday, 3 May, targeting locations in Swindon, London, Stockport, Rochdale, and Manchester.
The individuals arrested include a 29-year-old man in Swindon, a 46-year-old man in West London, a 29-year-old man in Stockport, a 40-year-old man in Rochdale, and a 24-year-old man in Manchester. All five were detained on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. Four suspects were held under the Terrorism Act 2006 (TACT), while one was arrested under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE).
On Monday, 5 May, police obtained warrants to extend the detention of four of the suspects until Saturday, 10 May. The fifth man was released on bail with strict conditions. Officers are conducting searches at multiple properties across Greater Manchester, London, and Swindon as the investigation continues.
Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, stated: “Our officers are progressing a significant and highly complex investigation, with public safety our absolute priority.” He added that police believe a specific location was targeted but did not disclose further details for operational security reasons.
Commander Murphy urged the public: “Please do not speculate or share unverified information. We are at an early stage and pursuing all lines of enquiry, including motive and any further risks.”
The Metropolitan Police are working closely with Greater Manchester Police, Wiltshire Police, and other counter terrorism units across the country.
