PC Mohammad Ghalayini, a former officer with the Metropolitan Police’s North Area Command Unit, was sentenced to 22 months in prison at Wood Green Crown Court on Monday, 31 October, after stealing £80 from a wallet that had been handed into police custody.
In addition to his jail sentence, Ghalayini was ordered to pay £3,000 in court costs. The theft was discovered when a fellow Met employee noticed the money missing from the wallet, which had been safely entrusted to the police.
Ghalayini was found guilty of theft and perverting the course of justice at Southwark Crown Court on 29 September. His arrest followed an undercover investigation by the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards on 24 March 2021. He was charged on 25 October 2021 and appeared before Thames Magistrates’ Court on 18 November 2021.
On 16 November, during a disciplinary hearing at the Empress State Building, Ghalayini was found to have breached the police standards of Discreditable Conduct and Honesty and Integrity. As a result, he was dismissed without notice, ending his police career.
Detective Chief Superintendent Caroline Haines, who oversees policing in Haringey and Enfield, commented on the case: “PC Ghalayini, following his imprisonment, has now also been rightly dismissed without notice following his dishonest and deceitful actions. It is really important that people have more trust in us, but actions like this understandably undermine confidence in the police. Across the Met we are working to clear out those who corrupt us and let down the public.”
Furthermore, Ghalayini has been added to the Barred List by the College of Policing, which prohibits him from holding any future police roles or related regulatory positions.
