Essex authorities have issued their first-ever £10,000 fine for a large gathering held in violation of Covid-19 rules. A 41-year-old man organised a wedding party in Margaretting that included 80 guests, significantly exceeding the legal limit of 15 people.
Police intervened at Ariana Gardens, Ivy Barn Lane, on Sunday 11 October at approximately 4:15pm following multiple reports about the sizeable event. Upon arrival, officers found around 80 guests seated for a wedding dinner, which was a clear breach of the coronavirus restrictions in place.
All attendees were instructed to leave immediately, with those refusing facing the possibility of fixed penalty notices. Fortunately, everyone complied without incident.
As police remained on site, they identified and located the event organiser, a 41-year-old man, who was subsequently reported for summons under the Coronavirus laws. Hosting a gathering exceeding 15 people carries a £10,000 fine.
Essex Police Assistant Chief Constable Andy Prophet commented on the situation: “This wedding party was a blatant breach of current restrictions which only allow 15 people at weddings. The rules exist to stop the virus spread and protect our communities. We’ve all missed special events over the last six months, but a selfish few risk health by flouting the law. While most of Essex pulls together, we won’t hesitate to crack down on reckless behaviour.”
Police continue to urge the public to report Covid rule breaches but advise verifying situations carefully before reporting to avoid false alarms.
