A violent thug has been jailed after savagely attacking two police officers trying to protect a young family in Essex. The terrifying incident left one officer with a deep bite wound and a fractured hand, while his female colleague suffered multiple injuries after being kicked and thrown to the ground.
On Sunday 20 September 2020, officers rushed to a New Road, Feering home following a disturbing 999 call. They found 27-year-old Alfie Butler attempting to force his way into the house of a family he knew, repeatedly kicking the door.
When the officers approached, Butler leapt over a gate and attempted to scale a fence. A struggle broke out. Butler punched the male officer in the face and shoved the female officer to the floor. As they tried to handcuff him, he continued his assault—biting the male officer’s hand and repeatedly kicking the female officer.
Butler was arrested and charged with assaulting emergency workers and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He later admitted his crimes. On 18 March, he was jailed for his brutal attack at Chelmsford Crown Court.
“Our officers ran towards danger while others walked away,” said Detective Constable Red Leeson from Braintree CID. “Despite being attacked and injured, they never gave up and ensured the family’s safety. They are a credit to Essex Police.”
“Attacks on emergency workers won’t be tolerated. We’re out here every day protecting the public, and the sentence handed down reflects that.”
The male officer suffered a fractured hand and a deep bite wound, requiring bone fragment removal. The female officer was injured in her back and legs after repeated kicks and being thrown to the ground.
Essex Police have vowed to crack down on attacks against emergency workers and continue standing strong against violence.
