A man was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday, 30 November, at an address in Harwich, Essex. The arrest was made under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 on suspicion of preparing or instigating terrorist acts, under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.
Officers are continuing to search the property, supported by Essex Police. The suspect remains in custody at an Essex police station as investigations proceed.
The arrest is connected to suspected extreme right-wing terrorism. Authorities have confirmed that there is no immediate threat to the public. Officials also stated that the incident is not linked to the murder of Sir David Amess MP.
Commander Richard Smith, head of the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, issued a public statement: “I’d firstly like to reassure the local community in Essex and beyond that we are not aware of any imminent threat to the public in relation to this arrest today.”
He added, “However, with the terrorism threat level recently raised to ‘severe’, I urge the public to stay vigilant. If you see or hear anything suspicious, please report it immediately.”
