It has been a decade since Dr Abdul Shakoor’s family was tragically killed in a devastating fire at their home in Harlow in 2012. The fire claimed the lives of Dr Shakoor’s wife, Dr Sabah Usmani, their sons Muneeb, aged nine, Rayyan, aged six, and daughter Hira, aged twelve. Their younger children, Sohaib, aged 11, and Maheen, aged three, later died in hospital due to injuries sustained.
On Saturday, a solemn memorial service was held at the Harlow Islamic Centre to honour the Shakoor family. Dr Abdul Shakoor travelled from Pakistan to attend the service and pay tribute to his lost loved ones. Speaking at the event, he said, “My loving wife was my best friend. I obviously had a difficult time on this day 10 years ago.”
The investigation into the fire remains open after all these years. Essex Police have stated that “there are facts in this case that don’t add up.” Witnesses reported seeing a white male in his twenties cycling away from the area around the time of the fire, but this individual has never come forward.
During the incident, Dr Shakoor’s laptop, which had a distinctive two-pin plug, was stolen and remains missing. Additionally, a mysterious note related to the fire was later found in a local Boots store. Essex Police also received an anonymous tip-off days after the tragedy and are keen to identify the caller.
Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe urged anyone with information to come forward, stating, “Any information about these lines of inquiry, or anything else about this tragedy, would benefit our investigation.”
Police believe the fire was deliberately set by burglars. The fire started downstairs while the family was asleep upstairs. Dr Shakoor attempted to save his family by jumping from a bedroom window but was overcome by smoke inhalation.
Dr Shakoor expressed gratitude for the support he has received from the community and his faith, which have helped him endure the pain of his loss. He added warmly, “My children loved living here.”
