Former Metropolitan Police officer Andrew Adams has been found guilty of misconduct after secretly recording adults in a leisure centre’s shower area in Essex. The incident took place in Witham on 29 February 2020, but the case concluded last month with Adams facing justice.
Adams, who was attached to the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, was off duty at the time of the offence. He concealed his mobile phone against a door facing the showers, capturing footage of unsuspecting adults using the facilities.
The case was heard at Chelmsford Crown Court where Adams was convicted on 21 September 2023. He was ordered to pay £3,500 in prosecution costs, £750 in compensation to the victims, and complete 150 hours of unpaid community work within nine months.
Following an investigation by Essex Police, Adams resigned from the Metropolitan Police on 31 May 2021. A misconduct panel later ruled that had he still been serving, he would have been dismissed without notice.
Detective Chief Superintendent Steve Ellen of Specialist Crime commented on the case, saying, “Former PC Adams’ actions were criminal and it is right that he no longer works for the Met. As the Commissioner has said, integrity is the foundation of policing. People rightly expect us to uphold the highest standards. We will not allow those who carry out criminal behaviour to remain in the organisation.”
Adams will now be added to the Barred List maintained by the College of Policing. This means he is banned from working for the police, local policing bodies, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, or Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Service indefinitely.
