A tragic incident occurred on the A13 in Dagenham when a 21-year-old woman died instantly following a police chase that ended in a fatal crash. The young woman was a passenger in a vehicle that collided head-on with a friend’s black BMW.
The other vehicle involved was a white van attempting to flee police, which was driving the wrong way along the A13 before the collision. Essex Police attempted to stop the van shortly after 2.30am on November 25, but the driver accelerated instead, leading to a dangerous pursuit.
The chase continued near Rainham, heading towards London, before the van crashed into another car. Firefighters had to cut the van driver free from the wreckage. He is currently hospitalised with serious injuries and faces multiple charges, including death by dangerous driving.
Detective Chief Superintendent Andrew Packer stated: “Despite the best efforts of officers and medics at the scene, a female passenger in the second vehicle has now died.” Essex Police are collaborating closely with the Metropolitan Police as the case is handed over to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) for a full investigation.
The crash caused significant traffic disruption, with the A13 closed for several hours. Tailbacks extended for miles beyond Rainham and reached as far as Barking. Additionally, the M25 and A127 experienced major delays due to the incident.
The Metropolitan Police Service and London Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment regarding the crash and ongoing investigations.
