Emergency crews were called to Turpins Close in Clacton just before 1pm on Tuesday, February 21, following reports of a serious incident. Police officers and ambulance teams arrived to find a woman in her 80s suffering from a severe head injury.
The woman was quickly taken to hospital for treatment but sadly passed away later. A post-mortem examination has been ordered to establish the exact cause of death.
Detectives launched an immediate investigation into the incident. An 84-year-old man named John Berry, who is known to the victim and also lives on Turpins Close, was arrested on suspicion of murder. He has now been formally charged with the offence.
John Berry is scheduled to appear at Colchester Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, February 23.
Detective Chief Inspector Ant Alcock expressed his condolences, stating, “This incident has deeply affected everyone who has had a hand in the Essex Police response. I want to also take this opportunity to offer my sincere sympathy to all those affected in this case – it is simply a tragedy.”
