An 80-year-old woman has been left with life-threatening injuries following a serious collision in Cosham at lunchtime.
The crash occurred near the junction of Cosham High Street and Vectis Way when a van turning into Vectis Way struck the elderly pedestrian, trapping her underneath the vehicle.
Firefighters from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue, Hampshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit, paramedics, and a Hazardous Area Response Team all rushed to the scene to assist.
A Hampshire Police spokesman said, “Our officers were called at midday following reports of a collision between a van and a pedestrian. The woman suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. A member of the public performed CPR before emergency crews arrived.”
The injured woman was treated by paramedics at the scene before being transported to Queen Alexandra Hospital for further care.
Police have closed Cosham High Street and Vectis Way as they continue their investigation. Motorists are advised to avoid the town centre while emergency services remain on site.
A spokeswoman for South Central Ambulance Service added, “We sent two ambulance crews and an ambulance officer who treated one patient in life-threatening condition before transporting her to hospital.”
Firefighters also provided vital first aid and helped secure the scene during the emergency response.
