Anthony Adewale Sobogun, 61, from Croydon, has been sentenced to 28 years behind bars at Inner London Crown Court for multiple historic child abuse offences. The Metropolitan Police investigation revealed 17 counts of sexual abuse against two children, with offences occurring throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
Sobogun’s crimes include multiple sexual assaults of a girl under 13 years old, including rape. Both victims were known to him, which made the betrayal particularly distressing.
One survivor disclosed that Sobogun accompanied her to an abortion clinic after she became pregnant with his child. Police confirmed the abortion through medical records and counselling notes that detailed the ongoing abuse.
Sobogun was arrested in July 2025 and convicted following a thorough, victim-led investigation.
Detective Constable Charlotte Lockyer said, “The bravery of the victims in coming forward is what brought Sobogun to justice. Their courage stopped a dangerous man from harming others. This case proves that no matter how long ago abuse happened, justice can still be served.”
Victims have spoken out about the impact of the abuse. One stated, “What has come to light is deeply distressing but sadly not isolated. Abuse exists in many communities, often hidden by fear and stigma. It’s never too late to speak out. If you’ve suffered abuse, your voice matters—you deserve to be heard and protected.”
They added, “People can seem trustworthy yet cause harm behind closed doors. That’s why it’s crucial to listen and take concerns seriously. We thank the Met Police, Detective Lockyer, prosecutor William Goss, and the CPS for handling this case with care and professionalism.”
The Metropolitan Police have invested £10 million in upgrading Video Recorded Interview (VRI) suites. These specially designed rooms provide a safe, trauma-informed environment to help victims give evidence comfortably and confidently.
The victim-centred approach used in Sobogun’s case helped secure vital evidence and support survivors throughout the court process. This upgrade marks a significant step in improving investigations and victim experiences across London.
