Chaos unfolded on the M25 motorway this Friday after a lorry spilled 250 litres of fuel, leading to the closure of a major section in Kent. A broken-down heavy goods vehicle (HGV) released fuel across all three lanes between junction 5 (Sevenoaks) and junction 4 (Bromley), forcing authorities to shut the anti-clockwise carriageway.
The spill brought traffic to a complete standstill, with the motorway now closed anti-clockwise towards Dartford. National Highways has warned that the closure will remain in place until at least the afternoon while emergency resurfacing work is carried out.
Tailbacks are building up towards junction 6 and the A22 in Surrey, with congestion extending along the A21 past Chipstead. Drivers are facing significant delays amid holiday-return traffic.
National Highways stated: “Recovery is complete but resurfacing is required for all three lanes. This is a protracted job, so the closure remains until at least this afternoon.” They have urged drivers to plan their journeys carefully and expect substantial delays.
Alternative routes and diversions have been set up, but these are expected to become congested as drivers attempt to avoid the motorway shutdown. Motorists are advised to stay updated on traffic conditions and consider avoiding the area if possible.
