Police in Margate and Broadstairs are stepping up efforts to combat anti-social behaviour this weekend by enforcing two dispersal orders around key beach locations.
Additional officers will be patrolling Margate Main Sands and the area between Botany Bay and Viking Bay. Their objective is to prevent crime and disorder following recent weekends marked by disturbances.
Kent Police have activated powers under the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act. From 4pm on Friday 3 July until 4pm on Sunday 5 July, any group of two or more people causing, or likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress can be dispersed immediately.
Thanet District Council has coordinated this initiative as part of a wider beach management plan aimed at addressing the increased number of visitors this summer.
Chief Inspector Ed Ruffle, District Commander for Thanet, said: “The vast majority of those who visit Thanet enjoy themselves without causing problems for other people. Unfortunately, in recent weeks a small minority have spoiled things with excessive drinking, anti-social behaviour and even violence. Kent Police is working closely with the council to keep our coasts safe and enjoyable for all residents and visitors.”
He added, “Our officers will be out in force, regularly patrolling and intervening where necessary. Anyone refusing to comply risks arrest.”
Residents and visitors are advised to avoid trouble spots and enjoy the weekend safely on Thanet’s beautiful beaches.
