Traffic on the M20 came to a standstill this evening following a dramatic two-vehicle collision involving a pair of Freelander SUVs. The crash resulted in one vehicle flipping onto its roof while the other collided with crash barriers, causing extensive tailbacks towards the Channel Tunnel.
The incident occurred during rush hour when the grey and red Freelander vehicles went off the road. One Freelander ended up overturned, lying on its roof, and the other mounted the crash barriers, requiring recovery teams to winch it clear from the scene.
Paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service attended promptly to assess the drivers involved. Fortunately, no serious injuries have been reported at this time. Both drivers are expected to be questioned by police in relation to the crash.
Highways England responded by closing the eastbound carriageway of the M20 to facilitate vehicle recovery efforts. This closure led to significant traffic jams stretching back towards the Channel Tunnel. Onlookers travelling westbound slowed down to observe the recovery operation.
Kent Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collision. Both drivers will be interviewed as part of the ongoing inquiry to establish if any offences were committed. An official police statement has not yet been released.
