Kent Police Cadets have received the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest accolade for volunteer groups in the UK, equivalent to an MBE. The announcement was made today, coinciding with celebrations of His Majesty The King’s birthday.
Since its launch in 2015, the Kent Police Cadet scheme has encouraged young people aged 11 to 18 to engage in community policing activities. Cadets participate in event stewarding, crime prevention initiatives, and serve as youth advisors, working alongside police officers weekly to gain practical policing experience.
Chief Constable Tim Smith praised the cadets and their leaders, stating, “Our cadets are vital members of the Kent Police family. This award recognises their achievements and the dedication of their leaders.”
The programme currently involves 434 cadets and 120 volunteer leaders across Kent. Cadets have the opportunity to earn qualifications such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and first aid training. They also benefit from educational trips, including visits to historic sites and expeditions like climbing Mount Snowdon.
The scheme aims to develop life skills beyond policing careers, although many cadets have progressed into roles within Kent Police, including as officers and Special Constables. Gavin McKinnon OBE, Director of Citizens in Policing, commented, “Our cadets learn vital decision-making skills and form lasting friendships. This award is a brilliant tribute as we near our 10th anniversary.”
This award marks Kent Police’s second national volunteer honour, having previously won The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2014 for the Special Constabulary. Kent remains the only UK police force to hold both top volunteer awards.
Crime Commissioner Matthew Scott added, “The cadet scheme offers fantastic opportunities for young people right across Kent. I congratulate all involved on this well-deserved recognition.”
