Steven Franklin, a 71-year-old man from South Darenth, Dartford, has been sentenced to 26 years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting two children over a span of 30 years.
The disturbing case was heard at Woolwich Crown Court, where Franklin was convicted of 10 sexual offences, including five counts of rape. The investigation was launched by Kent Police following allegations of long-term abuse made by one victim.
During the police inquiry, a second victim was identified who had suffered abuse dating back to the 1970s and endured more than ten years of exploitation.
Despite pleading not guilty in August 2023, Franklin was unanimously convicted by the jury. On November 14, he was sentenced and must serve at least two-thirds of his 26-year term before becoming eligible to apply for parole.
Detective Constable James McClelland praised the bravery of the victims, stating, “Franklin persistently and repeatedly assaulted his victims in the most vile manner for his own selfish gratification, showing no remorse and forcing them to endure a lengthy trial.”
He added, “I hope that Franklin’s lengthy jail term brings some comfort to his victims. Kent Police takes all reports of this nature seriously and encourages any victims to come forward, no matter how long ago the offence occurred.”
This significant sentence provides some closure to the victims, who demonstrated immense courage in reporting the abuse.
