Shoppers in Chatham town centre are on high alert following a bold distraction theft on Monday, 18 November 2024. At around 2:30 pm on the busy High Street, a man was unexpectedly hugged by a stranger, described as a woman, who then quickly fled towards Military Road. When the victim checked, he discovered his gold chain, featuring a distinctive lion emblem, had been stolen.
The suspect is described as a slim white woman, aged between 20 and 25, with brown hair. Witnesses reported that she spoke with an Eastern European accent. At the time of the theft, she was wearing an all-white outfit, including a white woollen hat, white top, and white trousers.
Sergeant Jason Francis of Kent Police issued a warning to shoppers ahead of the festive season: “As the festive period approaches, we want to remind people to stay alert when out shopping. If someone you don’t know tries to hug you, shake your hand, or ask for directions, be cautious and watch your valuables.” He added, “This chain meant a lot to the victim. We urge anyone who’s been offered it for sale to come forward.”
Anyone with information about the theft or who has been offered the stolen gold chain is asked to contact Kent Police on 01634 792209, quoting reference 46/200318/24. Tips can also be reported anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
To stay safe, shoppers are advised to keep their valuables close and secure, be extra cautious if strangers approach unexpectedly, and avoid distractions, especially in crowded shopping areas.
