Police in Kent are investigating a series of ATM card thefts where pensioners and other members of the public have had their bank cards stolen after using cash machines.
The scam involves a con artist approaching the victim at the ATM, claiming the machine is not working. While the victim is distracted, an accomplice steals the victim’s bank card. The victim is then left believing the machine has swallowed their card.
Recent incidents occurred on Wednesday 4 May 2022, with three cards stolen at ATMs located on Princes Avenue in Chatham, Knight Road in Rochester, and King Street in Gravesend. Similar attacks were reported on 25 April at Birling Avenue in Gillingham and Rainham Shopping Centre, where cash was subsequently withdrawn from one victim’s account.
Detective Inspector Pete Smith said: “These offences are carried out by groups operating in pairs. They often target a specific area for a few hours before moving on. They usually pick on elderly or vulnerable victims.”
He added: “When using ATMs, especially those outside banks or shops, make sure no one is close enough to see your PIN. Don’t talk to strangers while withdrawing cash. If you suspect you’re being targeted, call 999 immediately.”
