Police conducted operations across east and north London on 21 and 22 March, resulting in the arrest of four men linked to the murder investigation of Alex Ajanaku. Three men, aged 22 and 23, were arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. Additionally, a 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. All four suspects have been bailed until June.
The family of Alex Ajanaku, who was tragically shot dead at the age of 18 on the Beaumont Estate in Leyton, E10, have been updated about the recent arrests. The shooting occurred shortly after 1:25am on Wednesday, 1 September 2021. Detectives reported that Alex had attended an illegal music event the previous night. While most attendees left by the early hours, a small group remained seated on a bench when gunfire broke out.
Investigators linked the murder to a black Kia Sportage that was stolen from Chingford just before midnight on 16 August 2021. The vehicle was later found abandoned and severely fire-damaged in Walthamstow, E17, on 3 September.
The Metropolitan Police are offering a reward of up to £20,000 for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for Alex’s death. Detective Sergeant Fenton Davis stated: “We haven’t forgotten Alex and we’re determined to bring his killers to justice. Time has passed, and I hope witnesses now feel able to step forward. Carrying information for over a year and a half about a young man’s death is difficult – please do the right thing and speak up. Alex’s family deserve the truth. It is noted that a 43-year-old man was previously arrested on suspicion of murder shortly after the shooting but was later released with no further action.
