A 45-year-old man has died following a serious collision on the A13 near Rainham, east London, police confirmed.
The crash occurred late Sunday evening on the A13 slip road near New Road in Wennington.
The Metropolitan Police were called at 8:32pm after reports of a car smashing into a stationary lorry trailer parked in a layby.
Emergency teams, including the London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade, rushed to the scene.
Sadly, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
The initial crash triggered several other vehicles to collide, resulting in a multi-vehicle pile-up.
Fortunately, no further injuries were reported, but the incident caused significant overnight chaos.
The A13 eastbound was closed from Ferry Lane Interchange to Wennington Interchange.
Long delays and heavy congestion backed up traffic as far as Dagenham.
Recovery and investigation work continued into Monday morning.
Detectives are investigating the circumstances leading to the fatal collision and are urging witnesses to come forward.
“If you witnessed the crash or have relevant footage, please contact police on 101 quoting reference 7254/1Jun,” a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said.
National Highways advised drivers to avoid the affected stretch or expect lengthy delays.
Diversion routes were in place throughout Sunday night and Monday morning as authorities worked to clear the scene.
