The M20 motorway westbound is currently closed following a serious multi-vehicle crash involving two lorries and two cars. The collision occurred just before 3am on Friday, 29 August, between Junction 9 (Ashford) and Junction 8 (Maidstone) on the London-bound side.
National Highways confirmed that all westbound lanes remain shut as emergency services, traffic officers, and contractors work to clear debris and repair significant damage to the central reservation barrier.
A spokesperson said, “The M20 in Kent is closed westbound between J9 (Ashford) and J8 (Maidstone) due to a multi-vehicle collision. Emergency services are on scene. There is a large amount of debris across the carriageway and damage to the central reservation barrier. National Highways contractors will be attending to assist with clear-up works and repairs.”
Drivers trapped within the closure began being released from around 5.30am, according to officials.
In addition, a nearby bridge is undergoing inspections for potential damage following the crash. The incident comes amid heavy rain and flooding risks affecting southern England.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, forecasting up to 70mm of rain in parts of Kent, Essex, Sussex, Surrey, London, and south Wales.
National Highways has warned that disruption could continue into midday Friday as recovery and repair efforts proceed. Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes and check traffic updates before travelling.
