Chaos on the roads has erupted as emergency services respond to an incident near Lewes, causing a major shutdown on the A27 westbound close to the Southerham Roundabout, near Falmer and Lewes.
Drivers are currently stuck in extensive traffic jams, with the area experiencing gridlock due to the closure.
Severe congestion is also affecting surrounding routes. On the A259 westbound, slow queues stretch from Bishopstone near Seaford all the way to Newhaven. Meanwhile, on the A259 eastbound, traffic is crawling from Newhaven towards Rottingdean as motorists attempt to avoid the blocked A27.
National Highways has issued a warning to drivers, stating: “We ask drivers to avoid the area at this time.” Motorists are urged to allow extra travel time and seek alternative routes wherever possible.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and further updates will be provided as the incident develops.
