Drivers on the M27 have a reason to cheer as the long-awaited upgrade of a 15-mile stretch between junction 4 (M3 interchange) and junction 11 (Fareham) nears completion. National Highways has been carrying out the upgrade since March 2018, and the end is finally in sight.
Starting tomorrow night, workers will begin removing the temporary traffic management measures, including traffic cones and barriers. The motorway is scheduled to be fully reopened by 6am on Friday, 18th February, marking the end of years of road chaos for commuters and local drivers.
Once the cones are removed, the speed limit will initially increase to 60mph on all four lanes. This temporary speed limit will remain in place while stopped vehicle detection technology undergoes its final testing phase. After successful completion of these tests, the speed limit will rise further to 70mph along the fully upgraded section between junctions 4 and 11.
National Highways confirmed that “control room operators will be able to rapidly change speed limits and display warning signs during incidents,” enhancing safety and traffic flow on the motorway.
The upgrade has expanded the M27 to four lanes throughout this section, promising a smoother and safer journey for drivers. Motorists can now look forward to significant improvements and a faster, less congested M27 once the works are fully complete.
