Operation Brock has returned to the M20 in Kent as the region prepares for a busy summer on its roads. The Kent Resilience Forum (KRF) has reactivated the contraflow system to manage the expected surge of traffic travelling through Dover and Eurotunnel.

The contraflow system was reinstated overnight on Sunday, July 10. The KRF thanked local residents, businesses, drivers, and hauliers for their patience during the implementation of this traffic management measure.

Simon Jones, Strategic Planning Lead at the KRF, urged travellers to book their cross-Channel trips early to help keep traffic moving smoothly and support local businesses. He said, “With record bookings in July and August, especially around school holidays from July 15 and the peak weekend of July 22-24, expect heavy traffic.”

The contraflow directs lorries bound for mainland Europe onto the coastbound carriageway between Junctions 8 and 9, helping to reduce congestion. Other vehicles continue to flow in both directions along the M20.

New legal requirements mean that lorries must use designated HGV routes to Dover and Eurotunnel. National Highways had planned to permanently move the movable barrier to the central reservation, but this work is currently paused until Operation Brock concludes.

Nicola Bell, Regional Director for Highways England, commented, “Operation Brock has proven to keep freight moving steadily while allowing motorists to get through. We’re committed to reviewing the barrier’s use and removing it as soon as possible.” She added, “Thanks to everyone for bearing with us. Hauliers must follow signs and stick to the official route.”

With Kent’s roads expected to be busy with freight vehicles, local traffic, and holidaymakers, the return of Operation Brock aims to minimise severe congestion and help keep summer journeys on track.
