The Roundhill Tunnel has been closed coastbound to help prevent severe traffic tailbacks caused by the Port of Dover’s new traffic management plan, known as Operation TAP.
Operation TAP is a temporary system designed to queue lorries heading to Dover port in the left-hand lane of the A20 just after the Roundhill Tunnel. The main goal of this scheme is to keep the town of Dover free from heavy traffic jams and to improve air quality in the area.
With Operation TAP in place, stationary lorries will no longer clog up the streets of Dover, even when the port experiences slowdowns. Additionally, all vehicles entering Dover from the west along the A20 must now adhere to a 40 mph speed limit.
National Highways has deployed teams on site to manage the traffic flow effectively. Drivers are advised to follow diversion signs marked with a hollow black circle to avoid delays.
The recommended alternative route is as follows: exit the M20 at Junction 13 and join the A259 Churchill Avenue. Continue east until reaching the A260 Canterbury Road roundabout. Take the first exit off the A260 heading north. At the Spitfire Way roundabout, take the third exit onto the A20 coastbound.
