A serious crash involving two vehicles has forced the closure of the M4 eastbound between Junction 22 (Prince of Wales Bridge) and Junction 21 (M48) since just after midnight on Monday.
Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that emergency teams rushed to the scene around 12:05am. Both vehicles veered off the carriageway, resulting in several casualties.
National Highways has stated that the eastbound stretch is expected to remain closed throughout the peak morning rush hour. Recovery operations and investigation work are ongoing, with no quick reopening anticipated.
Motorists are advised to follow a diversion route via the M49 at Junction 22, then northbound on the M5 at Junction 18A. Drivers can rejoin the M4 eastbound at Junction 16 or cross the M48 Severn Bridge to pick up the M4 again at Junction 21.
Severe congestion has been reported around Chepstow as drivers avoid the closed section. While the westbound M5 is now open, the eastbound remains closed at least until mid-morning.
Police have urged travellers to allow extra journey time and to follow official instructions carefully. Authorities will announce when the M4 section is safe to reopen.
