Frustrated drivers using the Dartford Crossing have encountered significant problems after the Dart Charge website experienced a crash. Many users reported issues with card validation and were stuck with the “blue circle of death” while attempting to pay tolls.
National Highways, the government organisation responsible for managing England’s major roads, acknowledged the disruption caused by the payment system failure. They confirmed the system was affected by “unforeseen issues” and issued an apology for the inconvenience.
The organisation assured the public that a swift resolution was underway to restore the Dart Charge website’s functionality and ease the payment process.
For payments related to crossings from August 16 onwards, charges should soon appear on user accounts as auto-payments are processed while the system recovers. Additionally, National Highways has introduced a 14-day grace period for drivers who crossed the Dartford Crossing between July 27 and August 14 but have not yet paid.
This grace period allows affected drivers to pay the usual Road User Crossing fee without incurring any penalties during this time frame.
A National Highways spokesperson stated: “We regret the inconvenience and are working hard to fix the issues. Please re-validate your payment details online to ensure smooth travels.”
Drivers with unpaid crossings during the late July to mid-August period will receive a letter containing details alongside any Penalty Charge Notice issued, aiming to provide a fair resolution for all affected users.
National Highways is committed to fully restoring the Dart Charge payment system and prioritising drivers’ needs to resolve this disruption at one of England’s busiest crossings.
