Kent Resilience Forum (KRF) has issued a warning to travellers: expect busy border crossings and no last-minute tickets available for Eurotunnel or Dover ferry services this bank holiday weekend from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 May. Operators confirm that turn-up-and-go tickets have already sold out, so those without bookings should not expect a quick crossing.
The Jubilee Bank Holiday is causing a surge in travel as the nation prepares to celebrate the Queen’s 70 years of public service. Bookings remain extremely high for Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 June, with holidaymakers and football fans contributing to increased cross-Channel journeys.
Liverpool FC supporters travelling to the UEFA Champions League final in Paris on Saturday have secured their ferry and Eurotunnel tickets through early coordination with KRF and travel operators. However, others may face disappointment due to limited availability.
Kent, known for its beaches, countryside, and cultural attractions, is preparing for significant traffic congestion. Local roads are heavily congested with a mix of tourism, freight, and local travel. Reduced P&O ferry capacity continues to cause difficulties, resulting in the ongoing activation of Operation Brock on the M20 motorway to manage freight traffic heading to Europe since April.
Traffic controls at Brenley Corner near Faversham are redirecting EU-bound lorries back to the M20, which helps prevent gridlock in Dover town.
To assist travellers, National Highways has eased restrictions on the A2070 in Ashford until 6 June to improve traffic flow for both local and tourist vehicles. Drivers are advised to check routes before travelling, allow extra time for journeys, and pack essentials such as food, water, and medication in case of delays.
Kent Resilience Forum Tactical Lead Toby Howe said: “This weekend and the Jubilee Bank Holiday eve will be very busy on Kent’s cross-Channel routes. Stay updated with travel news via @HighwaysSEAST and @KentHighways. Allow extra time and carry something to eat and drink for delays.”
He added: “KRF partners will be monitoring the situation closely, working with Port of Dover, Eurotunnel, and National Highways to keep traffic moving.”
National Highways plans to lift M20 freight controls after the Jubilee weekend on the night of 5 June, which will allow permanent barrier relocation work to resume.
