The M20 motorway is currently closed in both directions between junction 1 (M25) and junction 2 (Wrotham) following a serious collision involving a van and a heavy goods vehicle (HGV).
The crash occurred at approximately 1.45pm on Friday 11 November, shutting the eastbound carriageway completely. The westbound side is also blocked as emergency crews, including an air ambulance, attend to the injured at the scene.
Kent Police are leading the emergency response, supported by the South East Coast Ambulance Service. Two men involved in the collision have been treated for injuries and rushed to hospital for further medical care.
A Kent Police spokesperson said: “At around 1.45pm on Friday 11 November, Kent Police was called to a collision involving a van and a lorry on the coastbound carriageway of the M20 between junctions 1 and 2. Officers and South East Coast Ambulance Service are at the scene where two men have been treated for injuries and are being taken to hospital for further medical attention. Both carriageways are currently closed while emergency services deal with the incident. The London-bound carriageway will be reopened once the air ambulance has departed.”
Motorists are advised that the eastbound M20 remains fully closed between junctions 1 and 2, while the westbound carriageway is blocked until the air ambulance leaves the scene. Drivers caught in the eastbound queues are urged to remain in their vehicles and follow police instructions.
There is currently no official reopening time for the motorway. Drivers are encouraged to use the M26 as a diversion to avoid the congestion. Heavy delays are expected on the M25 near junction 3 and on the M20 near junction 1 as a result of the closure.
National Highways teams are managing traffic flow and holding westbound vehicles until the air ambulance departs. Commuters should prepare for significant delays and consider alternative routes while emergency services work to clear the incident.
