Blistering cold air is sweeping down from the north, bringing snow, icy conditions, and biting frosts across the UK. The Met Office has issued severe weather alerts covering western England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland, with the possibility of more alerts in the coming days.
The UK Health Security Agency has declared a Level 3 Cold Weather Alert for all of England, effective until 9am on Friday, January 20. This alert warns that hazardous ice and snow could disrupt daily travel, urging residents to plan ahead and stay safe.
Dale Hipkiss, National Network Manager at National Highways, advises motorists to prepare for freezing road conditions. He said, “Freezing conditions bring loads of hazards like ice and snow. Check your tyres, coolant, and oil before you hit the road. Give yourself plenty of extra time and always listen to weather updates.” He added, “If conditions worsen, adapt your driving – slow down and keep your distance.”
Pet owners are also urged to take precautions during the cold snap. Justine Shotton, Senior Vice President of the British Veterinary Association, warned, “Shield outdoor hutches for rabbits and guinea pigs from snow, rain, and wind. Dogs and cats need easy access to warm indoor shelters.”
She continued, “Older or thin-furred dogs should wear coats on walks. Always wipe your dog’s paws and belly after being outside to remove toxic grit. Antifreeze is deadly – watch for poisoning signs like vomiting, seizures, or breathing trouble. If in doubt, contact your vet immediately.”
The bitter cold is expected to ease late this week, bringing milder, windier, and rainier weather to western regions over the weekend. However, cold snaps and sharp overnight frosts are forecast to persist in eastern and south-eastern areas.
