Police officers on Project Zero patrols in Royal Wootton Bassett and surrounding villages have caught 96 drivers committing motoring offences this week alone. This crackdown forms part of a wider county initiative aimed at reducing fatal road injuries by targeting the well-known ‘fatal five’ driving offences.
Every Wednesday, Project Zero increases patrols across various parts of the county. This week, the team focused on identifying speeders, drink and drug drivers, distracted motorists, those not wearing seat belts, and careless drivers.
To strengthen the operation, police collaborated with National Highways and the National Roads Policing Operational Intelligence (NRPOI) unit on Operation Tramline. An unmarked heavy goods vehicle (HGV) patrolled the M4 motorway to catch offenders attempting to evade detection.
“During the day, a total of 96 motoring offences were detected, ranging from speeding, failure to wear seat belts, and using mobile phones while driving, as well as vehicles with insecure loads,” said Acting Inspector Will Ayres.
The speed enforcement team targeted four key locations, including Cricklade, Charlton, and Little Somerford, responding to complaints from local residents. One driver was recorded driving at 48 mph in a 30 mph zone in Little Somerford.
Project Zero will continue its efforts next Wednesday by focusing on a new location as part of the ongoing campaign against reckless driving.
