Chaos unfolded on the A12 as a female driver blatantly ignored traffic cones to dodge a traffic jam following a crash near Marks Tey.
The incident occurred on the northbound A12 close to the Marks Tey junction at around 1.30pm on Tuesday, 18 April. Stuck in a standstill, the driver was caught on camera stepping out of her car, moving several traffic cones, and daringly cutting through to the opposite carriageway.
National Highways confirmed that a collision further up the road had halted all traffic, causing the jam that the driver attempted to escape by breaking the rules.
Adam Pipe, Head of Roads Policing, commented on the incident: “I appreciate a video of this incident has been circulating on social media due to it being particularly shocking.”
He added, “Areas that are coned off are for the safety of all road users and road workers. Anyone who disregards them is potentially putting themselves and others at risk.”
“We are working with National Highways to investigate this report and continue to keep roads in Essex safe,” said Pipe.
He urged motorists, “We ask motorists to adhere to the Highway Code and follow all local instructions when driving in Essex.”
“You can help reduce collisions and casualties by reporting all instances of poor and dangerous driving,” he concluded.
