A van erupted into flames this morning on the M25 between Junctions 5 and 6, causing thick black smoke and significant tailbacks during rush hour.
The vehicle burst into fire amid busy morning traffic, alarming drivers and creating chaos on the motorway. Kent Fire and Rescue promptly dispatched two fire engines equipped with breathing apparatus and foam systems to tackle the blaze.
National Highways closed the motorway to ensure safety and provide space for firefighters to work effectively.
Drivers experienced delays of up to 90 minutes on the clockwise M25, with queues stretching seven miles. The nearby M26 also faced 30-minute hold-ups as traffic came to a standstill.
After extinguishing the fire, crews remained on site to repair the damaged road surface. Two lanes stayed closed throughout the morning while workers resurfaced the area scorched by the burnt-out van.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Quick action by Kent Fire and Rescue and emergency teams prevented serious harm and maintained control of the situation.
