Commuters at the Dartford Crossing experienced significant delays today after a van caught fire in the East Bore Tunnel on the A282 northbound. The incident caused traffic to come to a standstill, resulting in delays of up to 90 minutes.
The East Bore Tunnel was closed immediately following the blaze, leading to widespread congestion across the M25 anti-clockwise and A282 routes. The West Bore Tunnel was also temporarily closed but has since reopened.
Firefighters responded promptly and successfully extinguished the fire. Safety inspections are currently underway inside the East Bore Tunnel before it can be reopened to traffic.
National Highways Traffic Officers and emergency services remain on site to manage the situation. Drivers are facing a tailback stretching approximately 7 miles as they approach the tunnels.
