The M25 Dartford Crossing is set for major overnight closures this weekend as the QEII Bridge undergoes vital maintenance work. This closure is expected to cause significant traffic disruption for all travellers using this key route.
The QEII Bridge will be closed from 10pm to 5am on Saturday, February 24, and Sunday, February 25. Commuters and travellers should prepare for serious delays while these essential repairs are carried out.
During the closures, the west-bore tunnel will remain open for northbound traffic heading into London. However, southbound drivers travelling from Essex to Kent will face a contraflow diversion using the east-bore tunnel. Motorists are advised to check live travel updates and plan alternative routes in advance to avoid delays.
National Highways explained that this maintenance programme began last summer to ensure the Dartford Crossing remains safe and reliable. The repairs will focus on the bridge’s ventilation, drainage, steelwork, pipework, as well as electrical and structural components that require urgent attention.
“This essential overnight work ensures safe, efficient journeys for all road users,” National Highways stated.
The Dartford Crossing, which forms part of the M25, handles more than 50 million vehicles annually. Although it was designed to accommodate 135,000 vehicles daily, traffic often exceeds this limit during peak hours, highlighting the importance of these upgrades.
Drivers should also remember to pay the crossing tolls: £2.50 for cars, motorhomes, and minibuses, and a minimum of £3 for buses, coaches, vans, and goods vehicles. Failure to pay the toll could result in a fine of up to £105 per crossing.
