A major five-mile section of the M25 motorway in Surrey is set to close this weekend, prompting warnings from National Highways about expected traffic chaos. The closure will take place between junctions 10 and 11 from 9pm on Friday until 6am on Monday.
The shutdown is necessary to carry out essential work including the demolition of a bridge and the installation of a new gantry. This stretch of the M25 is one of the busiest in the UK, making the closure a significant disruption for motorists.
National Highways has urged drivers to ignore satnav instructions that may direct them onto minor local roads. Instead, motorists are advised to follow the official diversion routes provided to avoid severe congestion and disruption in surrounding areas.
Jonathan Wade, project lead at National Highways, said, “Stick on the prescribed diversion route. It’s going to be more suitable for your journey.” Senior project manager Daniel Kittredge added that disregarding official diversions could cause additional problems for residents in local neighbourhoods.
This closure is part of a larger upgrade project at M25 Junction 10, which is scheduled for completion in summer 2025. The project aims to improve safety and traffic flow by adding lanes and enhancing access on and off the motorway.
Drivers should also be prepared for further daytime closures on the M25 until September as the work continues. National Highways strongly encourages all motorists to plan their journeys carefully and adhere to official diversion routes to minimise disruption and maintain road safety.
