Southbound traffic is currently restricted, causing tailbacks reaching as far as junction 28 near Upminster. Northbound drivers have been redirected through the east-bore tunnel, which remains closed for safety reasons, adding to the congestion.
The situation’s seriousness escalated with the involvement of Gravesend’s RNLI lifeboat crew. The lifeboat is still on site, providing crucial support alongside police as they manage the incident.
Essex Police said, “We understand the disruption this causes for commuters but are focused on resolving this safely and quickly.” National Highways has warned that disruption will last through the morning, with normal traffic flow unlikely before 10 am.
