Operation Brock, the contraflow system on the M20, is set to end as Easter traffic decreases. The system, which has helped keep traffic moving smoothly during the busy Easter weekend, covers 13 miles between Junction 8 (Maidstone) and Junction 9 (Ashford). It was introduced last month by highway officials to manage expected congestion.
With the holiday rush now over, the contraflow will be removed. To facilitate this, overnight lane closures are planned as follows: London-bound lanes will be closed from Junction 9 to Junction 8, and coastbound lanes will be closed from Junction 7 to Junction 9. These closures will take place from 8 pm on Sunday through to 6 am on Monday.
National Highways has assured drivers that clear diversion signs will be in place along the A20 to guide traffic safely during the closures. After the contraflow system is lifted, both carriageways on the M20 will fully reopen with three lanes each, and the national speed limit will be restored.
Operation Brock has been an important traffic management measure during busy periods on the M20, especially for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) heading to the Port of Dover and Eurotunnel. HGV drivers are required to follow official signed routes or face penalties.
A National Highways spokesperson stated, “Failure to follow designated routes can lead to a £300 fine for EU-bound HGVs and being sent to the back of the queue by police.” This enforcement also targets hauliers attempting to avoid queues by using alternative routes such as the M2/A2 at Brenley Corner.
As the M20 returns to normal after Easter, motorists are encouraged to obey all official signs and follow designated routes to ensure safe and smooth journeys.
