Kent Police are gearing up for a focused motorcycle safety blitz this May Day bank holiday to protect some of the county’s most vulnerable road users. On Monday, 6 May 2024, hundreds of motorcyclists are expected to travel along the A21 route from West Kent to Hastings in Sussex.
To ensure safety on these busy roads, the Kent Roads Policing Unit will join forces with National Highways officers and the Camera Safety Team. Enhanced patrols will specifically target risky riders and careless drivers. Officers will also engage directly with motorists to remind them of their responsibilities and take prompt action against those endangering others.
Sergeant Grant Steele of Kent’s Roads Policing Unit said, “Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable to serious injury in collisions. We are committed to educating riders about safe riding and cracking down on drivers who speed or use mobile phones behind the wheel. This operation is about promoting responsible behaviour to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable journey.”
This initiative is part of a wider cross-force operation known as Project Apex, which includes police forces from Sussex, Surrey, Thames Valley, and Hampshire. Officers will interact with riders at popular gathering points such as cafes and rest stops to help keep holiday rides both fun and safe.
Following a similar campaign over the Easter weekend, local forces have directed riders to the new Ride Craft Hub. This online resource offers expert advice from professional riders aimed at helping motorcyclists reduce risks on the roads.
Motorists and riders alike are urged to stay alert and keep their speed in check this bank holiday. Remember, safety comes first on some of the UK’s busiest roads.
