Bury’s town centre experienced four separate robbery attempts over two days, police have confirmed. The first three incidents took place on the evening of Wednesday 9 March 2022, with the latest occurring on Thursday afternoon.
At around 8.30pm on Moor Street near Subway, two men armed with a knife demanded cash from a lone victim. The suspects were described as skinny Asian males, approximately 5ft 10ins tall, wearing balaclavas and dark tracksuits. They fled without any money when the victim did not comply.
Just 10 minutes later, near the junction of Brunswick Street and Moor Road, two masked teenagers wielding baseball bats stopped a female victim. They tried to search her bag but ran off after a passerby intervened and chased them towards KFC. The attackers were described as Asian boys around 14 years old, dressed in all-black tracksuits with ski masks.
At 9pm, a woman walking on the footpath between Tesco Woodfield’s and Moor Street was followed by two men who demanded to check her bag. One was a white male, aged 18, about 5ft 8-10ins tall, with curly blonde or ginger hair, carrying a gold baseball bat and wearing a grey hoodie. The other was an Asian male, approximately 5ft 6ins tall, wearing a black balaclava and dark clothing. They left empty-handed after not finding any money.
The fourth incident occurred in the Tithebarn area at 3.30pm on Thursday. Two Asian males, about 18 years old and 5ft 6ins tall, dressed in balaclavas and all-black clothing, stole mobile phones from two victims.
Chief Inspector Matt Oxley of GMP’s Bury Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Thankfully no one was injured during these incidents. It is understandable these events will cause worry locally. We are doing all we can to catch those responsible and are following multiple lines of enquiry.”
“Expect a much increased police presence in Bury town centre this week. Anyone concerned is urged to speak with officers.”
“We especially want to speak to the member of public who stepped in to help one of the victims. If you have CCTV or dashcam footage, please get in touch.”
