A police officer deployed a taser multiple times on a man holding his young child at a petrol station, shocking witnesses and sparking outrage. The footage shows the officer using excessive force as the man is tasered repeatedly while his child watches, raising serious questions about police tactics and the protection of innocent bystanders.
Eyewitnesses described the force used as “disgusting” and “appalling.” The officer resorted to taser use as a first choice weapon rather than a last resort, escalating the situation in full view of the child. One onlooker said, “I don’t know what the man did or was accused of, but the way police handled it was incredibly difficult to watch. At times like these, we need the police to protect vulnerable people — not traumatise kids.”
The well-being of the child caught in the tense scene clearly took a backseat during the arrest.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed the man tasered is Desmond Ziggy Mombeyarara from Old Trafford. Officers stopped him shortly before 11pm on 6 May 2020 after spotting his vehicle speeding dangerously on Chester Road, Stretford. Mombeyarara was arrested and charged with two counts of resisting a constable and one count of driving at excess speed. During his arrest, a GMP officer deployed a taser.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Greater Manchester Police Professional Standards Branch. The case has also been handed over voluntarily to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to ensure an impartial probe.
Superintendent Mark Kenny said, “We are aware of public concern regarding this arrest and want to reassure everyone the matter is being treated very seriously. Referral to the IOPC ensures transparency and independence in reviewing the circumstances.”
The case has ignited heated debate on police use of force and the safety of children caught up in violent encounters.
