Liam Whitbread, 24, has been branded a ‘dangerous’ offender and sentenced to six years in prison after firing a homemade shotgun in a busy park in Radcliffe. The incident took place on a sunny Bank Holiday weekend and caused alarm among families and children present.
On Friday 1 April, Manchester Crown Court handed down the sentence, which includes an additional three years on licence following his release.
The disturbing event occurred on Saturday 30 May 2020 at Redbank playing fields in Radcliffe. Whitbread brought a homemade shotgun, known as a ‘slamgun’, concealed in a towel onto the park. A mobile phone video captured the moment he discharged the weapon towards what police believe was a rival gang, while unsuspecting families and children were enjoying the sunny day nearby.
Fortunately, no one was physically injured, but the gunshot caused panic and fear among those in the park. Police received multiple calls reporting the incident, triggering a detailed investigation by Bury CID to identify and apprehend the gunman.
Detectives built a strong case against Whitbread using witness statements, CCTV footage, and forensic evidence. After a four-day trial, the jury found him guilty of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.
At sentencing, Whitbread was described as a ‘dangerous offender’ and was ordered to serve six years in prison, followed by three years on licence.
Detective Inspector Andy Wright of GMP Bury CID condemned the reckless behaviour, stating, “The rash recklessness demonstrated by Liam Whitbread was as ridiculous as it was dangerous. It’s fortunate that nobody – including Whitbread himself – suffered physical injuries that day, but that doesn’t lessen the fear and distress caused. Crime involving guns is a top priority for us, and we are committed to keeping firearms off Bury’s streets. When incidents happen, we will always hunt down and bring offenders to justice.”
