A 16-year-old boy was seriously injured in a shocking shooting on Langdale Road, Stretford, on Thursday evening. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) are working urgently to piece together what happened and are intensifying efforts to reduce crime in the area.
Officers responded rapidly to an emergency call from the North West Ambulance Service, arriving at the scene around 4.30pm. The teenager sustained a serious chest wound from close-range shotgun fire and remains hospitalised, with his condition stable.
GMP quickly detained two local teenagers, aged 15 and 16, on suspicion of attempted murder. Both suspects are currently in custody and undergoing intensive questioning.
To prevent further violence, police have activated a 24-hour Section 60 order in Stretford and Trafford. This order grants officers expanded stop-and-search powers across the area from 3pm on August 11 until 3pm on August 12.
Detective Superintendent Lewis Hughes, head of GMP’s Serious Crime Division, said: “This incident is extremely serious. We’re working flat out to investigate every detail and reassure the local community.”
Hughes revealed that the boy was confronted by a large group of around 14 people—some on foot and others on bikes—before being shot at point-blank range with a shotgun. “It is simply horrific that those responsible think this is acceptable behaviour, especially since the victim is so young,” he added.
The detective urged witnesses to come forward, warning that suspects remain at large and the weapon has not yet been recovered. “We believe this was a targeted attack, which may reassure some residents.”
The Major Incident Team is leading the investigation, with uniformed officers and PCSOs increasing foot and mobile patrols in the area. GMP is appealing for anyone with dashcam, CCTV, or doorbell footage to contact them.
