Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has been targeted in a cyber attack that exposed personal information of its officers. The incident has raised significant concerns over data security and privacy within the force.
Assistant Chief Constable Colin McFarlane confirmed the attack, explaining that it involved a ransomware attack on a third-party supplier used by GMP and other organisations across the UK. “We are aware of a ransomware attack affecting a third-party supplier of various UK organisations, including GMP, which holds some information on those employed by GMP,” he said.
McFarlane emphasised that no financial data appears to have been compromised at this stage. However, he acknowledged that the breach of personal details remains a serious issue for the force and its staff.
In response, GMP has notified the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and is collaborating closely with relevant authorities to fully investigate the extent of the attack. The force is keeping employees informed and providing support throughout the situation.
GMP has pledged to protect its officers’ safety and security, promising transparency and prompt updates as the investigation progresses.
