An urgent tornado warning has been issued across England and Wales, raising concerns after a recent tornado caused significant damage in Greater Manchester.
The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) has highlighted a serious risk of damage from severe weather affecting Wales, the Midlands, and parts of northern England. TORRO stated, “The tornado risk, although low, may take on a bi-modal distribution – with one area of slightly higher risk across the RoI on Saturday morning, and another across parts of Central and Southeast England, the Midlands, and East Anglia on Saturday night. This latter area will be closely monitored for a possible tornado watch.”
Recently, a tornado struck Stalybridge, Tameside, with Greater Manchester Police confirming the damage was tornado-related. A GMP spokesperson said, “It is believed the damage caused was due to a localised tornado. GMP declared this a major incident due to the severity of the damage and potential risk to public safety.”
The UK has experienced a series of high winds, rain, and snow, leading the Met Office to issue nine yellow weather warnings covering gusts, heavy snowfall, and flooding.
Meteorologists have warned that the “Troll from Trondheim” weather system is expected to bring strong winds and heavy snow to the UK. Multiple warnings for snow, ice, and wind remain in effect for today and tomorrow. The Met Office advised, “There is a chance of very isolated tornadoes today on a band of heavy rain moving across Wales and England, with a higher risk further south. Most places will see brief heavy rain and gusty winds, but a few tornadoes cannot be ruled out.”
